False Step by Victoria Helen Stone

BOOK BLURB

Stay calm, keep smiling, and watch your step. In this marriage of secrets and lies, nothing is what it seems.

For days, all of Denver, Colorado, has worried over the fate of a missing child, little Tanner Holcomb. Then, a miracle: handsome, athletic Johnny Bradley finds him, frightened but unharmed, on a hiking trail miles from his wealthy family’s mountain home.

In a heartbeat, his rescuer goes from financially strapped fitness trainer to celebrated hero. The heat of the spotlight may prove too much for Johnny’s picture-perfect family, however. His wife, Veronica, despises the pressure of the sudden fame, afraid that secrets and bitter resentments of her marriage may come to light. And she’s willing to do anything to keep them hidden.

But when a shocking revelation exposes an even darker side to Tanner’s disappearance, Veronica realizes that nothing in her life can be trusted. And everything should be feared.

False Step by Victoria Helen Stone

MY REVIEW

Veronica is suddenly in the spotlight when her husband, Johnny, finds a missing toddler. Johnny is enjoying being a hero and all the media attention, but Veronica is afraid her secrets may be revealed. When Veronica learns there was more to the toddler’s disappearance, she realizes her secrets are the least of her worries.

False Step is a combination of family drama and suspense. Veronica is unhappy with her life, primarily with her marriage. When Johnny is the local hero and in all the news, Veronica feels even more overwhelmed. Add in the mystery surrounding the toddler’s disappearance, and Veronica life is completely turned upside down.

False Step is a fast-paced and entertaining domestic suspense. This is a fairly predictable story, especially for avid readers of thrillers. Still, I found it to be an enjoyable summer read. Dark, fun, and compelling.

BOOK BLURB

THE WIFE: For Alice, life has never been better. With her second husband, she has a successful business, two children, and a beautiful house.

HER HUSBAND: Alice knows that life could have been different if her first husband had lived, but Nathan’s arrival into her life gave her back the happiness she craved.

HER BEST FRIEND: Through the ups and downs of life, from celebratory nights out to comforting each other through loss, Alice knows that with her best friend Beth by her side, they can survive anything together. So when Nathan starts acting strangely, Alice turns to Beth for help. But soon, Alice begins to wonder whether her trust has been misplaced . . .

The first mistake could be her last.

The First Mistake by Sandie Jones

MY REVIEW

Alice lost her first husband in a sudden accident. She was devastated with the loss, but now has her life back on track. She’s got a successful business, a charming second husband, two good kids, and a best friend. Alice also suffers from anxiety and irrational fears. When she starts to suspect everything is not as wonderful as it seems, she isn’t sure who she can trust.

Alice is a successful woman in both her personal and professional lives. She has a lot going for her, but she also has some anxiety issues that hold her back. She enjoys her work, her family, and girl time with her bestie Beth. However, when she starts to look at things a little closer, she suspects her husband is up to something. She turns to Beth, but isn’t sure she can be trusted. It seems everyone has secrets to hide.

The First Mistake is divided into three parts. The first and last are present day, but the second part is set in the past. The first part lays the foundation for Alice’s story and where things are headed. The second part focuses on Beth’s story. The third part brings everything together in a dramatic and thrilling way.

This made for a fantastic summer read. The First Mistake fast-paced and exciting, making the time fly by. Great for fans of domestic thrillers. Intense and suspenseful.

I Know You by Annabel Kantaria

BOOK BLURB

A twisted domestic thriller in the vein of B. A. Paris and Shari Lapena that asks: How well do you know your friends?

That picture you posted?
I’ve seen it.
That location you tagged?
I’ve been there.
I know everything about your life . . .
And I’m going to destroy it.

A recent transplant from sunny California, life in the London suburbs is not what Taylor Watson expected. Far from the West End shops and city lights she imagined, she finds herself pregnant and lonely, with a husband frequently away on business and only social media to keep her company. It’s only after Taylor joins a book club and a walking group, that she finally starts to make some real-life friends.
Before long, Taylor’s hanging out with Anna, Sarah, Simon, and Caroline but, as her pregnancy progresses and her friendships blossom, a sense of unease develops. Nothing’s ever quite as it seems on the surface, and it soon becomes clear that Taylor’s new friends have secrets. One appears to be after Taylor’s husband, another’s always putting her down, and then there’s the question of Simon. Could he have feelings for Taylor?
But far more worryingly, one of the group’s not being too careful what they post on social media—and another is watching all too closely. Who’s stalking who . . . and why?

I Know You by Annabel Kantaria

MY REVIEW

Taylor and her husband recently moved to the London suburbs from California. Her husband is gone a lot for work, and Taylor finds herself lonely and wanting friends. To make new friends, she joins a local walking group and a neighborhood book club. She makes a few friends, but as time progresses, Taylor learns that everyone is keeping secrets.

Taylor is a young woman in a marriage that has had some ups and downs, and now she’s expecting her first child. When she and her husband move to London, she’s hoping for a fresh start. The downside is that she doesn’t have any friends in their new town. When she starts to make friends, it seems all is great. Then things start to go wrong, and it seems everyone is a suspect.

I enjoyed the social media aspect of I Know You. With most everyone having some involvement on social media, it’s scary how easily people can be watched. I Know You did a good job of incorporating current trends into a suspenseful tale of a stalking. With so many secrets, this psychological thriller is a guessing game of who has done what. A quick and entertaining read.

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

BOOK BLURB

Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline; and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors.

Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl—but that’s just what happens with visitor Sadie Loman and Littleport resident Avery Greer. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable—until Sadie is found dead. While the police rule the death a suicide, Avery can’t help but feel there are those in the community, including a local detective and Sadie’s brother, Parker, who blame her. Someone knows more than they’re saying, and Avery is intent on clearing her name, before the facts get twisted against her.

Another thrilling novel from the bestselling author of All the Missing Girls and The Perfect Stranger, Megan Miranda’s The Last House Guest is a smart, twisty read with a strong female protagonist determined to make her own way in the world.

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

MY REVIEW

Avery and Sadie formed a friendship, despite them being from different social circles. Sadie’s family is wealthy and spends their summers vacationing in Maine. Avery is a townie. The young women have spent their summers together for years, and are best friends. When Sadie is found dead, Avery suspects her friend has been murdered, and she is determined to find the killer.

Told with multiple timelines, alternating between the summer Sadie died and the following summer. Avery works for Sadie’s family managing their rental properties. She and Sadie were close friends, but the other members of Sadie’s family never fully accepted Avery into their world. Furthermore, the townies feel like Avery is no longer part of their world, since she spends so much time with the wealthy summer people. In the year following Sadie’s death, Avery’s life is in a bit of turmoil, and she’s feeling lost and alone.

As Avery recalls the night Sadie died, she considers the suspects and reasons for her friend’s death. There are plenty of suspects, and Avery seems like a prime suspect herself. With secrets and twists, The Last House Guest is a mystery that kept my interest. An entertaining and easy read. Great for anyone looking for a quick summer thriller.

Her Daughter's Mother by Daniela Petrova

BOOK BLURB

She befriended the one woman she was never supposed to meet. Now she’s the key suspect in her disappearance. For fans of The Perfect Mother and The Wife Between Us comes a gripping psychological suspense debut about two strangers, one incredible connection, and the steep price of obsession.

Lana Stone has never considered herself a stalker–until the night she impulsively follows a familiar face through the streets of New York’s Upper West Side. Her target? The “anonymous” egg donor she’d selected through an agency, the one who’s making motherhood possible for her. Hungry to learn more about her, Lana plans only to watch her from a distance. But when circumstances bring them face-to-face, an unexpected friendship is born.

Katya, a student at Columbia, is the yin to Lana’s yang, an impulsive free spirit who lives life at the edge. And for pragmatic Lana, she’s a breath of fresh air and a welcome distraction from her painful breakup with her baby’s father. Then, just as suddenly as Katya entered Lana’s life, she disappears–and Lana might have been the last person to see her before she went missing. Determined to find out what became of the woman to whom she owes so much, Lana digs into Katya’s past, even as the police grow suspicious of her motives. But she’s unprepared for the secrets she unearths, and their power to change everything she thought she knew about those she loves best…

Her Daughter's Mother by Daniela Petrova

MY REVIEW

Lana and Tyler want a baby, but they have been unable to conceive. Soon after making the decision to use an egg donor, their relationship hits a rough patch. After their break-up, Lana sees a familiar face… the egg donor, Katya. Wanting to know more about the donor, Lana follows Katya, and the two end up hitting it off. Soon after their friendship gets started, Katya disappears. Lana may have been the last person to see Katya, and she becomes a suspect in her disappearance. Wanting to find the truth about what happened to Katya, Lana delves deeper into Katya’s life.

Told with alternating points of view – Lana and Katya. Both women are unreliable narrators. It’s clear from the beginning that Lana is hiding something from Katya, but it’s not clear what Katya is up to. Add in Tyler, and the story gets more complex.

Her Daughter’s Mother is a well done thriller. Lana and Katya both have stories to tell. Though I couldn’t really relate to either character, I was invested in the story and curious how it would end. Her Daughter’s Mother is a compelling novel of mystery and suspense. Full of secrets and lies, Her Mother’s Daughter kept me up late reading. Fantastic debut novel.

Stone Mothers by Erin Kelly

BOOK BLURB

You can’t keep the secret.
You can’t tell the truth.
You can’t escape the past

Marianne was seventeen when she fled her home in Nusstead – leaving behind her family, her boyfriend, Jesse, and the body they buried. Now, thirty years later, forced to return to in order to help care for her sick mother, she can feel the past closing around her. And Jesse, who never forgave her for leaving in the first place, is finally threatening to expose the truth.

Marianne will do anything to protect the life she’s built, the husband and daughter who must never know what happened all those years ago. Even if it means turning to her worst enemy for help… But Marianne may not know the whole story – and she isn’t the only one with secrets they’d kill to keep.

Stone Mothers by Erin Kelly

MY REVIEW

As a teenager, Marianne left her hometown of Nusstead. Now, thirty years later, she has returned to care for her ailing mother. Marianne’s husband surprises her with a new flat in Nusstead. Unfortunately, the flat is in a renovated mental asylum. The one place that Marianne never wanted to see again. Marianne has a secret from her past that deals with the former asylum, and she wants to keep her secret hidden.

Stone Mothers is told with multiple points of view (Marianne, Helen, and Honor) and multiple timelines (2018, 1988, and 1958). The 2018 timeline is the present story of Marianne, her family, and secrets from her past. The 1988 timeline is also about Marianne, and a crime she and her boyfriend committed. The 1958 timeline is about Helen.

Stone Mothers is a slow-paced novel that took a little while to get into. I never really connected with Marianne, but I found Helen fascinating. The different POVs and timelines enhanced the story, making for a more interesting read.

Atmospheric and suspenseful. Fans of Erin Kelly’s He Said/She Said will likely enjoy Stone Mothers.

BOOK BLURB

Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they’re right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she’s never been more tired in her life. But she knows what she saw: that night, in her hospital room, a woman tried to take her babies and replace them with her own…creatures. Yet when the police arrived, they saw no one. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she’s imagining things.

A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren’s side in a park. But when they’re found, something is different about them. The infants look like Morgan and Riley—to everyone else. But to Lauren, something is off. As everyone around her celebrates their return, Lauren begins to scream, These are not my babies.

Determined to bring her true infant sons home, Lauren will risk the unthinkable. But if she’s wrong about what she saw…she’ll be making the biggest mistake of her life.

Compulsive, creepy, and inspired by some of our darkest fairy tales, Little Darlings will have you checking—and rechecking—your own little ones. Just to be sure. Just to be safe.

Little Darlings by Melanie Golding

MY REVIEW

Lauren has newborn twins. In the hospital room one night, Lauren sees a woman try to take her babies and replace them with her own. The police find no one around, and everyone thinks Lauren is imagining things. A month later, the babies disappear. When they are found, they look like Lauren’s twins, but Lauren believes they are not her babies. To get her babies back, Lauren will do the unthinkable.

Lauren is a fantastic unreliable narrator. She is a new mother of twins, so it’s not surprising that everyone around her (husband, doctor, etc.) considers her behavior to be due to exhaustion and postpartum depression. The questioning of what was real, or if there was a supernatural element in play, made for a compelling read. The fairy tale element added to the eerie atmosphere.

Little Darlings is thriller inspired by dark fairy tales. Good for fans of psychological thrillers and Grimms’ fairy tales. Dark, creepy, and clever.

Those People by Louise Candlish

BOOK BLURB

From the author of the international bestseller Our House, a new novel of twisty domestic suspense asks, “Could you hate your neighbor enough to plot to kill him?”

Lowland Way is the suburban dream. The houses are beautiful, the neighbors get along, and the kids play together on weekends.

But when Darren and Jodie move into the house on the corner, they donʼt follow the rules. They blast music at all hours, begin an unsightly renovation, and run a used-car business from their yard. It doesn’t take long for an all-out war to start brewing.

Then, early one Saturday, a horrific death shocks the street. As police search for witnesses, accusations start flying—and everyone has something to hide.

Those People by Louise Candlish

MY REVIEW

A nice suburban neighborhood gets some new residents. The new neighbors are a disruption, and everyone seems to dislike them. When a shocking death occurs, the neighbors all seem to have something to hide.

Told with alternating points of view, where the various neighbors give their version of events. The story is told partly in flashback, with the police interviewing the neighbors and everyone recalling the events leading up to the suspicious death.

I enjoyed the premise, but was never fully drawn into the story. The relationships between the neighbors, and the reactions to the new neighbors, were intriguing but not as dramatic as I would have liked. Unfortunately, everyone was unlikable, not just “those people”. It was cleverly written, but I found it a little too predictable.

Those People is a slow-burning psychological thriller. Good for fans of Louise Candlish and domestic suspense. I preferred Our House over this one, but they are similar reads.

The Sound of Echoes by Eric Bernt

BOOK BLURB

Only one man can stop the most dangerous conspiracy ever designed in a shattering thriller about the end of secrets from the author of The Speed of Sound.

After going on the run—for what he knows and has created—autistic Eddie Parks is back in Harmony House, the think tank that has been his sanctuary for sixteen years. With his miraculous invention, an “echo box” that excavates sounds from the past, Eddie achieved the only thing he wanted: to hear his late mother sing. But where Eddie sees good, others see infamy. Because no conversation ever held will be a secret again.

For Bob Stenson, leader of the American Heritage Foundation, whoever controls the echo box controls the future. To seize the game-changing device, he has to get Eddie where he’s most vulnerable: by kidnapping Dr. Skylar Drummond, the only person in the word Eddie trusts.

But Stenson has underestimated his prey. Eddie has the power of echoes on his side. Now he must follow them—into the most dangerous places he’s ever ventured—to save Skylar and the country.

The Sound of Echoes by Eric Bernt

MY REVIEW

The Sound of Echoes is the second book in the Speed of Sound thriller series by Eric Bernt. I read the first book in this series, and was looking forward to the next adventure with Eddie and his “echo box”. Since this book picks up where the first book ended, it is best to read The Speed of Sound before reading The Sound of Echoes.

Eddie is a high-functioning autistic savant. He lives in a place called Harmony House, a think tank for autistic savants. In The Speed of Sound, Eddie was working on an “echo box”. He had dreams of using the box to hear his deceased mother sing. Of course, there were others wanting to use the box for more nefarious plans.

Eddie doesn’t trust many people, or anyone really, but he has formed a trusting relationship with Dr. Skylar Drummond. This book opens with Eddie back at Harmony House and Skylar in danger. The people interested in the echo box decide to go after the one person Eddie cares about. Eddie and Skylar are thrown again into a fast and thrilling mystery.

An exciting and action-packed technothriller. Not exactly realistic, but a fun and fast-paced read. Enjoyable characters, a bit of humor, and plenty of action.

The Book Supremacy by Kate Carlisle

BOOK BLURB

In the latest in this New York Times bestselling series, San Francisco book-restoration expert Brooklyn Wainwright investigates a mysterious spy novel linked to a string of murders…

Newlyweds Brooklyn and Derek are enjoying the final days of their honeymoon in Paris. As they’re browsing the book stalls along the Seine, Brooklyn finds the perfect gift for Derek, a first edition James Bond novel, The Spy Who Loved Me. When they bump into Ned, an old friend from Derek’s spy days, Brooklyn shows him her latest treasure.

Once they’re back home in San Francisco, they visit a spy shop Ned mentioned. The owner begs them to let him display the book Brooklyn found in Paris as part of the shop’s first anniversary celebration. Before they agree, Derek makes sure the security is up to snuff—turns out, the unassuming book is worth a great deal more than sentimental value.

Soon after, Derek is dismayed when he receives a mysterious letter from Paris announcing Ned’s death. Then late one night, someone is killed inside the spy shop. Are the murders connected to Brooklyn’s rare, pricey book? Is there something even more sinister afoot? Brooklyn and the spy who loves her will have to delve into the darkest parts of Derek’s past to unmask an enemy who’s been waiting for the chance to destroy everything they hold dear.

The Book Supremacy by Kate Carlisle

MY REVIEW

The Book Supremacy is the 13th book in the Bibliophile Mystery series by Kate Carlisle. In this latest addition to the series, Brooklyn and Derek are on their honeymoon when Brooklyn finds the perfect gift for Derek – a first edition James Bond spy novel. When they return home, they visit a spy shop owned and operated by an old friend of Derek. The shop is celebrating it’s first anniversary and the owner asks to display the spy novel. Being a spy shop, security is top notch, so Brooklyn and Derek loan out the book. Soon after it goes on display, someone attempts to steal it and commits murder in the process. Brooklyn is on the case to sleuth and discover who is after the book and why.

As mentioned, this book falls later in the series. I’ve only read the first book in this series, Homicide in Hardcover, so I’ve missed out on a good portion of the books. Anyway, this one was easy to follow and could be read as a standalone. I enjoyed this book and the first one in the series, so it’s a series on my list to go back and catch up on.

I love that this series focuses on books, and the main character, Brooklyn, is a bookbinder and interested in books both professionally and personally. A great series for book lovers who enjoy cozy reads. Likable characters, fun plot, and entertaining setting. Light and charming.

The Poconos will never be the same…

Something Borrowed, Something Mewed by Bethany Blake

MY REVIEW

Daphne Templeton returns in Something Borrowed, Something Mewed, the fifth book in the Lucky Paws Petsitting mystery series by Bethany Blake. In this latest book, Daphne’s sister Piper is getting married. Their mother insists on hiring a wedding planner who plans an extravagant wedding. When the wedding planner is found strangled with a garter, Daphne sleuths to find the killer.

Something Borrowed, Something Mewed is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. I’ve only read one other book in this series, but I do plan to go back and read the others. It’s a cute cozy mystery series that has a small town setting, fun characters, and plenty of animals. Daphne is accompanied by her basset hound, Socrates, on her adventures. For the cat lovers out there, Daphne also has a cat and her pet sitting job in this book is for a cat.

One of the characters in this book is named Dorinda, so I thought that was cool. Not the same spelling as my name, but close enough. What made it even better was Dorinda’s mother’s name was Beverly. That’s my mother’s name. Weird coincidence.

A cozy mystery with humor and romance. A fun series for fans of cozy mysteries, especially cozies involving pets. I look forward to reading more of this series.
