Killer Story by Matt Witten

BOOK BLURB

How far will she go to catch the killer—and make her podcast a hit?

Talented and idealistic young reporter Petra Kovach is on the brink of being laid off from her third failing newspaper in a row. To save her job, she pitches the launch of a true crime podcast about a sensational, unsolved murder.

Years earlier, an alt-right YouTuber was killed in her Harvard dorm room, and the case went cold. Petra knew the victim—she was once her camp counselor and loved her like a little sister, despite their political differences.

Petra’s investigation gets off to a rocky start, as her promising leads quickly shrivel up. In her passionate quest for justice—and clicks—Petra burns sources and breaks laws, ultimately putting her own life on the line. Even as her star rises, she worries it could all come crashing down at any moment if her actions are exposed.

When her machinations start to backfire, there’s only one way to fix everything and solve the murder—even though it may cost her everything she loves.

Killer Story by Matt Witten

MY REVIEW

Petra is a journalist trying to keep her job. To avoid being fired, she asks for time to do a true crime podcast about a murder. Petra knew the victim, and wants justice for her friend.

Killer Story is told from Petra’s point of view. Petra is an unlikable character that makes poor, hasty decisions throughout the book. While I wasn’t a fan of Petra, the story really pulled me in.

A fast-paced, gripping mystery. Recommended for readers who enjoy crime fiction and podcasts.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

BOOK BLURB

Picture a lovely cottage on a cliff, with sloping lawns, walking paths, and beautiful flowers. It’s Gabe and Pippa Gerard’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Over the past several months, Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge.

Until one day, he doesn’t. When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral. . . .Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate . . . lie? As the perfect façade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel. Because sometimes, the most convincing lies are the ones we tell ourselves.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

MY REVIEW

A married couple, Gabe and Pippa, live near a cliff where people go to end their lives. Gabe has talked several people out of jumping. Unfortunately, one night a woman jumped and Gabe was not able to save her. At least, that’s what Pippa thinks until she learns that Gabe knew the victim. With Gabe acting strangely, Pippa questions how well she knows her husband.

The Soulmate is told using multiple points of view and timelines. The viewpoints are from Pippa and Amanda, the victim. The timelines are now and then for Pippa, before and after for Amanda. The characters are intriguing, though unlikable.

An atmospheric domestic thriller. The Soulmate has secrets, lies, and plenty of family drama. Fans of Hepworth’s other books are sure to enjoy this one too.

BOOK BLURB

When a local teenager discovers a severed hand and foot washed up on the shore of the small town of Point Mettier, Alaska, Cara Kennedy is on the case. A detective from Anchorage, she has her own motives for investigating the possible murder in this isolated place, which can be accessed only by a tunnel.

After a blizzard causes the tunnel to close indefinitely, Cara is stuck among the odd and suspicious residents of the town—all 205 of whom live in the same high-rise building and are as icy as the weather. Cara teams up with Point Mettier police officer Joe Barkowski, but before long the investigation is upended by fearsome gang members from a nearby native village.

Haunted by her past, Cara soon discovers that everyone in this town has something to hide. Will she be able to unravel their secrets before she unravels?

City Under One Roof by Iris Yamashita

MY REVIEW

A resident of a small, isolated Alaskan town finds severed body parts washed up on the town’s shore. Cara, a detective from Anchorage, is on the case.

City Under One Roof is the first book in the Cara Kennedy series. The town residents live in the same high-rise building. As Cara investigates, she learns all the residents are keeping secrets. Interesting characters in a unique setting.

An atmospheric debut novel. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Drift by C.J. Tudor

BOOK BLURB

Hannah awakens to carnage, all mangled metal and shattered glass. After she was evacuated from a secluded boarding school during a snowstorm, her coach careered off the road, trapping her with a handful of survivors. They’ll need to work together to escape—with their sanity and secrets intact.

Meg awakens to a gentle rocking. She’s in a cable car stranded high above snowy mountains, with five strangers and no memory of how they got on board. They are heading to a place known only as “The Retreat,” but as the temperature drops and tensions mount, Meg realizes they may not all make it there alive.

Carter is gazing out the window of an isolated ski chalet that he and his companions call home. As their generator begins to waver in the storm, something hiding in the chalet’s depths threatens to escape, and their fragile bonds will be tested when the power finally fails—for good.

The imminent dangers faced by Hannah, Meg, and Carter are each one part of the puzzle. Lurking in their shadows is an even greater danger—one with the power to consume all of humanity.

The Drift by C.J. Tudor

MY REVIEW

A dangerous virus has affected the nation. People without the virus are trying to survive. The environment is harsh, and the people are desperate.

The Drift is different than C.J. Tudor’s other books, but it’s enjoyable. There are three different stories happening, and how they connect makes for an intriguing read. The setting is a cold, bleak apocalyptic world. The characters are unique.

A dark and tense thriller. Recommended for fans of apocalyptic and survival thrillers.

The Things We Do To Our Friends by Heather Darwent

BOOK BLURB

Edinburgh, Scotland: a moody city of labyrinthine alleyways, oppressive fog, and buried history; the ultimate destination for someone with something to hide. Perfect for Clare, then, who arrives utterly alone and yearning to reinvent herself. And what better place to conceal the secrets of her past than at the university in the heart of the fabled, cobblestoned Old Town?

When Clare meets Tabitha, a charismatic, beautiful, and intimidatingly rich girl from her art history class, she knows she’s destined to become friends with her and her exclusive circle: raffish Samuel, shrewd Ava, and pragmatic Imogen. Clare is immediately drawn into their libertine world of sophisticated dinner parties and summers in France. The new life she always envisioned for herself has seemingly begun.

Then Tabitha reveals a little project she’s been working on, one that she needs Clare’s help with. Even though it goes against everything Clare has tried to repent for. Even though their intimacy begins to darken into codependence. But as Clare starts to realize just what her friends are capable of, it’s already too late. Because they’ve taken the plunge. They’re so close to attaining everything they want. And there’s no going back.

The Things We Do To Our Friends by Heather Darwent

MY REVIEW

Clare looks to reinvent herself at university. She makes some friends, but they are not exactly good people. Clare’s not a good person either though.

The Things We Do to Our Friends has toxic friendships, entitlement, and manipulation. The story is told from Clare’s point of view, and she’s a bit of an unreliable narrator. The characters are unlikable. The setting is atmospheric.

Slow-burning and dark mystery. An entertaining debut novel.

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes

BOOK BLURB

Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom they’d been spending time with all summer.

Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that has allowed her to cope with what happened years ago, the gaps in her memories, and the lost time that she can’t account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires hometown to relive that fateful summer—the influence Frank once had on her and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey.

At her mother’s house, she excavates fragments of her past and notices hidden messages in her deceased Guatemalan father’s book that didn’t stand out to her earlier. To save herself, she must understand a story written before she was born, but time keeps running out, and soon, all roads are leading back to Frank’s cabin. . . .

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes

MY REVIEW

Maya returns to her hometown to cope with trauma from her past. As a teen, her best friend died mysteriously. Seven years later, another girl dies in the same way. Maya decides to confront her past and search for answers.

The House in the Pines is told from Maya’s point of view in the past and present. The past is from her senior year in high school and the present is seven years later. Maya is an unreliable narrator who has self-medicated for years.

I love unreliable narrators, and was intrigued by the premise of this book. Unfortunately, the writing didn’t completely pull me in. That said, I still found The House in the Pines to be an entertaining debut novel.

A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones

BOOK BLURB

Some people greet the day with open arms. Sheriff Sunshine Vicram would rather give it a hearty shove and get back into bed, because there’s just too much going on right now. There’s a series of women going missing, and Sunny feels powerless to stop it. There’s her persistent and awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri, who’s out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. And then there’s drama with Levi Ravinder—the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years. The guy who might just be her one and only. The guy who comes from a family of disingenuous vipers looking to oust him—and Sunshine—for good.

Like we said, the new day can take a hike.

A Hard Day For a Hangover by Darynda Jones

MY REVIEW

Sunshine is the sheriff in a small New Mexico town. Between a busy work schedule, her love life, and a teenage daughter, Sunshine has a lot on her plate. And, oh boy, does Sunshine has her hands full in this book!

A Hard Day for a Hangover is the third book in the Sunshine Vicram series. I recommend reading the earlier two books before diving into this one. While this book can stand on its own, understanding the characters and what has happened previously makes for a more enjoyable read.

The characters are quirky. The setting is charming. The writing is witty. The story is exciting. A Hard Day for a Hangover is a gripping read with romance, humor, and mystery. A great read for fans of mysteries with strong female protagonists and sarcastic humor.

Vanishing Hour by Laura Griffin

BOOK BLURB

Corporate lawyer Ava Burch has had enough of the big city and the daily grind. She grew up with her father, who raised search-and-rescue dogs, in rural Texas and has moved to the small town of Cuervo to spend time in the dry, rugged wilderness near Big Bend National Park. When she and her dog, Huck, discover an abandoned campsite on a volunteer search-and-rescue mission, she’s perplexed, but she carefully photographs it all the same.

All Grant Wycoff can see when he looks at Ava is a city slicker–with her designer jeans and shiny car–who has no business on a serious team made of seasoned outdoorsmen and retired cops. But when she tells him of her findings on the trail, he sees there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Ava’s discovery reminds Grant of the unsolved case of a young woman who went missing two years ago. As they look into the campsite further, another woman disappears under odd circumstances. With time running out, Ava and Grant must work against the brutal heat from both the Texas sun and their own electric chemistry to solve the case.

Vanishing Hour by Laura Griffin

MY REVIEW

A corporate attorney, Ava, tired of the city moves to a rural town in Texas. Ava practices law in the small town, and volunteers with her dog doing search-and-rescue. When she discovers an abandoned campsite, she reports it to the authorities. When she and a local detective, Grant, return to the site, they find it gone. Grant suspects the site is connected to a missing person cold case. When another woman goes missing, they work to quickly solve the case.

Vanishing Hour is told through the alternating points of view of Ava and Grant. The characters were realistic and believable. This is a romantic suspense novel, but the mystery is at the forefront.

A fast-paced and enjoyable mystery. Recommended for fans of romantic suspense.

As Harriet is drawn into their lavish world, the family seems perfectly welcoming. So when Edward’s father, Robert, hands Harriet a tape of a book he’s been working on, she is desperate to listen.

But as she presses play, it’s clear that this isn’t just a novel. It’s a confession.

A confession to a grisly crime. A murder. And, suddenly, the game is in motion.

Feeling isolated and confused, Harriet must work out if this is part of a plan to test her loyalty or something far darker. What is it that Robert sees in her? Why give her the power to destroy everything?

This might be a game to the Holbeck family—but losing could still prove deadly.

READY OR NOT, HERE THEY COME . . .

The Family Game by Catherine Steadman

MY REVIEW

A woman meets her soon-to-be in-laws, and gets involved in a dark and mysterious game.

The Family Game is told using the single point of view of Harriet, aka Harry. Soon after meeting her fiancé’s eccentric family, the family patriarch gives her a cassette tape. On the tape is a confession, which puts a dark game into motion.

The Family Game is a slow burning psychological thriller. Atmospheric, creepy, and twisted.
