Last Seen Alone by Laura Griffin

BOOK BLURB

Up-and-coming attorney Leigh Larson fights for victims of sexual extortion, harassment, and online abuse. She is not afraid to go after the sleaziest targets to get payback for her clients. Leigh is laser-focused on her career—to the exclusion of everything else—until a seemingly routine case and a determined cop turn her world upside down.

Austin homicide detective Brandon Reynolds is no stranger to midnight callouts. But when he gets summoned to an abandoned car on a desolate road, he quickly realizes he’s dealing with an unusual crime scene. A pool of blood in the nearby woods suggests a brutal homicide. But where is the victim? The vehicle is registered to twenty-six-year-old Vanessa Adams. Searching the car, all Brandon finds is a smear of blood and a business card for Leigh Larson, attorney-at-law.

Vanessa had hired Leigh just before her disappearance, but Leigh has no leads on who could have wanted her dead. Faced with bewildering evidence and shocking twists, Leigh and Brandon must work against the clock to chase down a ruthless criminal who is out for vengeance.

MY REVIEW

Sarah is on the run from her abusive husband, a cop who will not give up on finding her. She changed her name, and has a new job. Her new boss, Mick, soon realizes Sarah is hiding something. As Mick helps Sarah, they develop feelings for one another.

Sarah is an heiress, but her estranged husband wants her money. She’s on the run, wanting to divorce her husband and gain her life back. Mick is a Hollywood director with a “bad boy” image, and a complicated past. They make for entertaining characters.

The Runaway Heiress is a fast-paced romantic suspense. This was my first book by Meg Tilly, and I will pick up others by her in the future.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

BOOK BLURB

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

MY REVIEW

After a terrible accident, Verity Crawford is unable to finish writing her best selling book series. Her husband hires Lowen Ashleigh to ghostwrite the remaining books. While searching for Verity’s notes, Lowen comes across an unfinished autobiography by Verity. The autobiography was never meant to be found, and contains some chilling admissions.

Told with the alternating viewpoints of Verity and Lowen. Lowen is a struggling author who prefers to live a very private life. The opportunity to ghostwrite a popular series comes at a time when she needs the money and the escape. Verity is a popular author who is basically catatonic after an accident. Verity is married to Jeremy, who Lowen starts to have feelings for as the story progresses.

A plot that is fast-paced, twisted, and complex. Characters that are well developed, intriguing, and unlikable. A thriller that will leave you unsettled. Recommended to fans of domestic thrillers.

Double Blind by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen

BOOK BLURB

Kendra Michaels, formerly blind and now a hired gun for law enforcement agencies who relies on her razor-sharp powers of observation, is reluctant to help the FBI with the most recent case they’ve brought to her. But then she hears the details: the body was found just blocks away from Kendra’s condo. The young woman was carrying an envelope with Kendra’s name on it, and inside was an SD card with what appears to be an innocuous video of a wedding reception. The woman died trying to get the video to Kendra, but for what purpose? Before Kendra and the FBI can answer that question, the bride is abducted from her suburban home.

And so the hunt is on for a killer whose nightmarish plan is slowly becoming clear. A plan that involves a powerful law firm and a multi-billion dollar corporation. As the body count rises, Kendra joins forces with private investigator Jessie Mercado and agent-for-hire Adam Lynch to stop the plot as it grows ever closer to its terrifying conclusion.

MY REVIEW

Kendra Michaels is not too happy about working with the FBI again, but this case has her name on it. Literally. A woman is killed, and on her body they find an envelope addressed to Kendra. Inside the envelope is a wedding video that no one seems to be able to make heads or tails of. As Kendra gets involved, the body count rises and Kendra herself is in danger.

Double Blind is the sixth book in the Kendra Michaels series by Iris Johansen. I haven’t read all of the previous books, but, from the few I have read, this is a fun and exciting series. I need to go back and read the ones I somehow missed.

Kendra was blind and had enhanced abilities with her other senses, making her great at the power of deduction. She is no longer blind, but still has an incredible critical thinking abilities. A strong female protagonist who is smart, brave, and honest.

Double Blind is a fast-paced, light, and entertaining read. Plenty of suspense and a little romance. A good read for fans of Iris Johansen.
