The Safari by Jaclyn Goldis

BOOK BLURB

Odelia Babel, CEO of a sustainable fashion empire, is about to marry for the second time—to a man twenty-five years her junior. Asher Bach is the thirty-something designer of Odelia’s luxury clothing line, the darling of every high-fashion journalist, and madly in love with Odelia.

Eager to celebrate her nuptials with her nearest and dearest, Odelia invites her adult children, her daughter-in-law, her grandchild, and her best friend/assistant to an all-expenses-paid luxury safari at Leopard Sands in South Africa, the Babel family’s favorite vacation spot.

It seems like the perfect trip, but not everyone is thrilled for the happy couple. Amid game drives in the bush and bonfires beneath the desert stars, tensions among the family threaten to boil over. And then, the morning after a big fight with her son Sam—and hours before the wedding—Odelia is found murdered. Sam is immediately the prime suspect, but he claims he has an ironclad alibi—he was with his twin sister, Bailey. Only Bailey is nowhere to be found…

The Safari by Jaclyn Goldis

MY REVIEW

A woman finds a second chance at love, and invites her family and friends to her wedding at a luxury safari. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy for her, and she is killed before her wedding.

The Safari has shady characters, a unique setting, and a twisted plot. There are plenty of suspects to choose from in this mystery thriller. A heavy dose of drama and dysfunctional family.

Serial Killer Games by Kate Posey

BOOK BLURB

Dolores dela Cruz has been dying to spot one in the wild, and he fits the mold perfectly: strangler gloves, calculated charm, dashing good looks that give a leg up in any field . . . including fields of unmarked graves.

The new office temp is definitely a serial killer.

Jake Ripper finds a welcome distraction in his combative and enigmatic new coworker. He hasn’t come across anyone as interesting as Dolores in a long time. But when mere curiosity evolves into a darkly romantic flirtation, Jake can’t help but wonder if, finally, he’s found someone who really sees him, skeletons in the closet and all.

Until Dolores asks Jake’s help to dispose of a body . . .

Serial Killer Games by Kate Posey

MY REVIEW

The office where Delores works hires a new temp, Jake. They are drawn to one another, and start watching and trying to figure out one another. Soon, they each suspect the other of being a serial killer.

Serial Killer Games is told using dual points of view – Delores and Jake. It is fun to read the thoughts and actions of both characters, and see how it plays out.

This novel is a more romance than mystery. With quirky characters and dark humor, Serial Killer Games is a fun read.

Julie Chan Is Dead by Liann Zhang

BOOK BLURB

Julie Chan, a supermarket cashier with nothing to lose, finds herself thrust into the glamorous yet perilous world of her late twin sister, Chloe VanHuusen, a popular influencer. Separated at a young age, the identical twins were polar opposites and rarely spoke, except for one viral video that Chloe initiated (Finding My Long-Lost Twin And Buying Her A House #EMOTIONAL). When Julie discovers Chloe’s lifeless body under mysterious circumstances, she seizes the chance to live the life she’s always envied.

Transforming into Chloe is easier than expected. Julie effortlessly adopts Chloe’s luxurious influencer life, complete with designer clothes, a meticulous skincare routine, and millions of adoring followers. However, Julie soon realizes that Chloe’s seemingly picture-perfect life was anything but.

Haunted by Chloe’s untimely death and struggling to fit into the privileged influencer circle, Julie faces mounting challenges during a weeklong island retreat with Chloe’s exclusive group of influencer friends. As events spiral out of control, Julie uncovers the sinister forces that may have led to her sister’s demise and realizes she might be the next target.

Julie Chan Is Dead by Liann Zhang

MY REVIEW

Julie doesn’t have a lot going for her, but her long lost twin sister is a popular influencer. When Julie discovers her sister’s dead body, she decides to hide the fact her sister’s died, and take over as her.

Julie Chan is Dead is told through the point of view of Julie herself, since she’s not really dead. Julie is a bit unhinged, making for an entertaining viewpoint. She dreams of the perfect life, but realizes her sister’s life wasn’t as perfect as it appeared.

Dark humor and mystery combine in this debut novel. Julie Chan is Dead is a fun ride with satire and a twisted story.

BOOK BLURB

Florence Grimes is a thirty-one-year-old party girl who always takes the easy way out. Single, broke and unfulfilled after the humiliating end to her girl band career, she has only one reason to get out of bed each day: her ten-year-old son Dylan. Florence, for once, is faced with a task she can’t quit: She’s got to find Alfie and clear her son’s name, or risk losing Dylan forever.

The only problem? Florence has no useful skills, let alone investigative ones, and all the other school moms hate her. Oh, and Florence has a reason to suspect Dylan might not be as innocent as she’d like to believe…

All the Other Mothers Hate Me by Sarah Harman

MY REVIEW

A mother wants to prove her son’s innocence after a classmate goes missing on a field trip.

All the Other Mothers Hate Me is told through Florence’s point of view. She is the mother of a ten year old boy, who is suspected of having something to do with a classmate’s disappearance. Florence sets out to prove her son’s innocence. Florence is eccentric, and lives a fairly chaotic existence. She’s a mess, and feels the other mother’s judge her.

All the Other Mothers Hate Me is a debut novel. It is a fun mystery with humor and suspense. Good for readers looking for a more lighthearted mystery.

The Last Session by Julia Bartz

BOOK BLURB

When a catatonic woman shows up at the psychiatric unit, social worker Thea swears she knows her from somewhere. She’s shocked to discover the patient holds a link to a traumatic time in her past. Upon regaining lucidity, the patient claims she can’t remember the horrific recent events that caused her brain to shut down. Thea’s at a loss—especially when the patient is ripped away from her as suddenly as she appeared.

Determined to find her, Thea follows a trail of clues to a remote center in Southwestern New Mexico, where a charismatic couple holds a controversial monthly retreat to uncover attendees’ romantic and sexual issues. Forced to participate in increasingly intimate exercises, Thea finds herself inching closer not only to her missing patient, but also to tantalizing answers about her harrowing past. However, time is running out, and if she stays for the last session, she too might lose her mind…or worse.

The Last Session by Julia Bartz

MY REVIEW

Thea, a social worker at a psychiatric unit, recognizes a patient and wants to help her. When the patient abruptly leaves the facility, Thea tries to find her, and ends up in a remote wellness retreat.

The Last Session is told through Thea’s point of view. Thea is naive and makes some poor decisions throughout the book. The plot is entertaining, but does involve suspending disbelief.

This is a slow burning and bizarre mystery. Good for readers who enjoy fiction involving cults and wellness retreats gone wrong.

Kills Well with Others by Deanna Raybourn

BOOK BLURB

After more than a year of laying low, Billie, Helen, Mary Alice, and Natalie are called back into action. They have enjoyed their time off, but the lack of excitement is starting to chafe: a professional killer can only take so many watercolor classes and yoga sessions without itching to strangle someone…literally. When they receive a summons from the head of the elite assassin organization known as the Museum, they are ready tackle the greatest challenge of their careers.

Someone on the inside has compiled a list of important kills committed by Museum agents, connected to a single, shadowy figure, an Eastern European gangster with an iron fist, some serious criminal ambition, and a tendency to kill first and ask questions later. This new nemesis is murdering agents who got in the way of their power hungry plans and the aging quartet of killers is next.

Together the foursome embark on a wild ride across the globe on the double mission of rooting out the Museum’s mole and hunting down the gangster who seems to know their next move before they make it. Their enemy is unlike any they’ve faced before, and it will take all their killer experience to get out of this mission alive.

Kills Well with Others by Deanna Raybourn

MY REVIEW

Four retired female assassins are called back to action. A mysterious Eastern European figure with a connection to the four friends’ first mission is targeting the four ladies.

Kills Well with Others is the second book in the Killers of a Certain Age series. This book is better enjoyed if you have read the first book, Killers of a Certain Age, and are familiar with the characters – Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie.

This book is told through Billie’s point of view, and includes flashbacks from the past. The characters are well-developed and interesting. The story is action-packed and entertaining.

Kills Well with Others is a fast-paced and fun mystery.

BOOK BLURB

Ten strangers.

An old dark house.

A killer picking them off one by one.

And a missing girl who’s running out of time…

And then there was one.

Ten strangers wake up inside an old, locked house. They have no recollection of how they got there. In order to escape, they have to solve the disappearance of a young woman. But a killer also stalks the halls of the house and soon the body count starts to rise. Who are these strangers? Why were they chosen? Why would someone want to kill them? And who—or what—lurks in the cellar?

Forget what you think you know.

Because while you can trust yourself, can you really trust The Other People?

The Other People by C.B. Everett

MY REVIEW

Ten strangers are trapped in an old house, and a killer is picking them off one by one.

The Other People is told using the multiple points of view of the people in the house. It’s a locked room mystery with interesting characters and plenty of drama. I usually enjoy locked room mysteries, but this one fell flat for me.

Fans of locked room mysteries may enjoy this one. It’s a bit creepy and does have a good twist.

A Serial Killer's Guide to Marriage by Asia Mackay

BOOK BLURB

I wasn’t smashing the patriarchy; I was killing it. Literally.

Hazel and Fox are an ordinary married couple with a baby. Except for one small thing: they’re murderers. Well, they used to be. They had it all. An enviable London lifestyle, five-star travels, and plenty of bad men to rid from the world. Then Hazel got pregnant.

Now, they’re just another mom-and-dad-and-baby. They gave up vigilante justice for life in the suburbs: arranged play dates instead of body disposals, diapers over daggers, mommy conversations instead of the sweet seduction right before a kill. Hazel finds her new life terribly dull. And the more she forces herself to play her monotonous, predictable role, the more she begins to feel that murderous itch again.

Meanwhile, Fox has really taken to being a father. Always the planner, he loves being five steps ahead of everyone and knowing exactly what’s coming around the bend. Plus, if anyone can understand Hazel needing one more kill, it’s Fox. But then Hazel kills someone without telling Fox. And when police show up at their door, Hazel realizes it will take everything she has to keep her family together.

A Serial Killer's Guide to Marriage by Asia Mackay

MY REVIEW

Hazel and Fox are serial killers. Well, they were until they had a baby. Now, they are living dull lives in the suburbs. Hazel is bored. Fox is stressed. Hazel eventually kills someone, but thinks she can keep it from Fox.

A Serial Killer’s Guide to Marriage uses dual points of view, so the reader gets Hazel and Fox’s viewpoints. Hazel misses their old lives, and wants more excitement. She’s an artist. She’s passionate and impulsive. Fox is a business man. He’s organized and the one responsible for planning their kills. When Hazel kills behind Fox’s back, she’s trying to keep that hidden, but Fox is hiding his own secrets. Oh, and Hazel’s new bestie is a police officer, which does complicate things a bit.

A Serial Killer’s Guide to Marriage is a fun and entertaining thriller. Dark humor, secrets, and serial killers.

Deadbeat by Adam Hamdy

BOOK BLURB

Peyton Collard was a good man once, but his life changed after a horrific car accident. Divorced, drunk, and severely damaged, Peyton is offered a life-changing sum of money to kill an evil man. But as he goes on a vigilante journey that leaves a trail of bodies across California, Peyton wonders about the identity of his anonymous patron. Soon, his questions become an obsession, and he embarks on a tense and potentially deadly investigation to discover the truth about the murders he’s committed.

Deadbeat by Adam Hamdy

MY REVIEW

Peyton is on a downward spiral. An unknown benefactor bails him out of jail, then a large sum of money is offered to him if he kills a man. More money is offered if he keeps killing. Peyton wants to know who is behind these anonymous messages, so he starts investigating on his own.

Deadbeat is a slower paced thriller. Peyton admits to being a killer, and he’s also an unreliable and unlikable character. While the plot is intriguing, there was too much repetition to keep me interested in the story.

But who better than them to appreciate Alfred’s creation? And to help him finish it.

MY REVIEW

Old college friends are reunited at The Hitchcock Hotel. Alfred runs the hotel, and invites his old film club friends to celebrate the hotel’s one year anniversary. Once they’re all reunited, things take a dark turn, and someone ends up dead.

The Hitchcock Hotel is told using multiple points of view and timelines. The timelines are past and present, with one major event happening in college that changed their friendships. The characters are intriguing and the setting is unique.

Atmosphere and tension make The Hitchcock Hotel a compelling read. Recommended for fans of dark and twisty murder mysteries.

BOOK BLURB

A YouTubing cruiser couple sails the world living their best lives—until one of them goes missing and their whole world capsizes, in this captivating psychological thriller perfect for fans of Something in the Water and Saint X.

Sawyer Stone III and Dani Fox, a young couple who spend their time circumnavigating the globe aboard their 42-foot sailboat and documenting it for their fledgling YouTube channel Sailing with the Foxes, have anchored in Exuma, in the Bahamas. As they wait for the price of crypto to rebound so they can provision and continue their journey, they’re partying and exploring with their fellow cruisers offshore. On the surface, everything looks perfect. But one night, Dani vanishes after a boat party, and Sawyer has no memory of her disappearance.

The search for Dani is initially fueled by concerns that she drowned during one of her daily ocean swims, but Dani’s prescheduled video posts, recorded before she went missing, soon reveal a darker side to her relationship with Sawyer. Meanwhile, Royal Bahamas Police Force Inspector Veronique Knowles has her hands full trying to keep the investigation on course as the story of the American woman missing in the Bahamas goes viral and the internet sleuths unearth secrets from Sawyer’s past. Sawyer Stone is far from perfect, but is he a murderer?

On the Surface by Rachel McGuire

MY REVIEW

Dani and Sawyer have a YouTube channel chronicling their adventures sailing around the world. One morning, Sawyer wakes up to discover Dani is missing, and he has no memory of what happened. Soon, a prerecorded video of Dani is posted, and Sawyer is the prime suspect in her disappearance.

On the Surface is told through multiple points of view. The characters are complex and mostly unlikable. The setting is unique and atmospheric. The writing flows well and makes for an enjoyable read.

An intriguing and twisted thriller. On the Surface is good for fans of domestic and psychological thrillers.
