Love Letters to a Serial Killer by Tasha Coryell

BOOK BLURB

An aimless young woman starts writing to an accused serial killer while he awaits trial and then, once he’s acquitted, decides to move in with him and take the investigation into her own hands in this dark and irresistibly compelling debut thriller.

Recently ghosted and sick of watching her friends fade into the suburbs, thirty-something Hannah finds community in a true-crime forum that’s on a mission to solve the murders of four women in Atlanta. After William, a handsome lawyer, is arrested for the killings, Hannah begins writing him letters. It’s the perfect outlet for her pent-up frustration and rage. The exercise empowers her, and even feels healthy at first.

Until William writes back.

Hannah’s interest in the case goes from curiosity to obsession, leaving space for nothing else as her life implodes around her. After she loses her job, she heads to Georgia to attend the trial and befriends other true-crime junkies like herself. When a fifth woman is discovered murdered, the jury has no choice but to find William not guilty, and Hannah is the first person he calls upon his release. The two of them quickly fall into a routine of domestic bliss.

Well, as blissful as one can feel while secretly investigating their partner for serial murder…

Love Letters to a Serial Killer by Tasha Coryell

MY REVIEW

A woman writes letters to an accused serial killer. After he is acquitted, she moves in with him and starts investigating the murders.

An intriguing mystery about a woman obsessed with true crime and a serial killer. She is consumed with the mystery, and driven to solve it.

Love Letters to a Serial Killer is a slow burning mystery. A compelling debut novel.

However, they soon discover that all is not as it seems. The champagne may be flowing, but there is no one to pour it. Room service is available, but there is no one to deliver it. Besides the ten of them, they are completely alone.

When one of the guests is found murdered, fear spreads through the group. But that death is only the beginning. Being three days’ journey from home and with no way to contact the outside, can any of the guests survive their stay?

The Launch Party by Lauren A. Forry

MY REVIEW

Ten people are chosen to be the first to visit Hotel Artemis on the moon. When they arrive, they realize they are alone. When one of the ten is killed, fear spread as they all try to survive.

The Launching Party is told using multiple points of view. There are a lot of characters. Unfortunately, for the most part, they felt flat. I found the premise interesting, but I never fully connected with this story.

The Launch Party is a suspenseful locked room mystery.

When Mark is viciously attacked by an unknown assailant, he is forced on the run. From New York to Singapore to London, he chases after clues while dodging attacks and trying to solve the puzzle of who’s after him. All without killing anyone. Or getting killed himself. Assassins Anonymous by Rob Hart

MY REVIEW

A former assassin has changed his ways, and joined a twelve step program for reformed killers. After he is attacked, he goes on the run and tries to uncover who is responsible for the attack on him.

Assassins Anonymous is a unique thriller. Quirky characters and a fast-paced story. A mystery with a combination of humor and violence.

The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry

BOOK BLURB

A single mother working in the gothic mansion of a reclusive horror director stumbles upon terrifying secrets in the captivating new novel from the national bestselling author of Good Girls Don’t Die and Horseman.

Harry Adams has always loved horror movies, so it’s not a total coincidence that she took the job cleaning house for movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding graystone Chicago mansion, Bright Horses, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes, as well as glittering awards from his career making films that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry.

Javier values discretion, and Harry has always tried to clean the house immaculately, keep her head down, and keep her job safe—she needs the money to support her son. But then she starts hearing noises from behind a locked door. Noises that sound remarkably like a human voice calling for help, even though Javier lives alone and never has visitors. Harry knows that not asking questions is a vital part of working for Javier, but she soon finds that the sinister house may be home to secrets she can’t ignore.

The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry

MY REVIEW

A woman accepts a house cleaning job of an eccentric horror movie director. The longer she works in the house, she realizes there are secrets in the house that she is unable to ignore.

The House That Horror Built is told using multiple points of view. The premise is intriguing, but the characters did not pull me into the story.

The House That Horror Built is a gothic and atmospheric novel with horror and mystery.

Stars Harbor Astrological Retreat promises rest, relaxation, and wisdom for Margot and her friends. With Instagram-worthy views and nightly astrology readings in an impeccably restored waterfront Victorian house, this getaway should be nothing but idyllic fun.

For Margot’s brother, Adam, it’s the perfect opportunity to rekindle the romance that fuels his writing. But his wife, Aimee, hides the darkness of her past with a beautiful social media feed. Their friend, Farah, is a successful doctor who cannot admit that she’s losing control.

Yet no one holds a greater secret than their astrologer host, Rini. She has a plan for all of her guests, and one of them won’t be leaving Stars Harbor alive.

The Astrology House by Carinn Jade

MY REVIEW

A group of wealthy adults attend an astrology retreat to relax. Everyone is hiding secrets.

This book is told using multiple points of view. There are a lot of characters, and their different viewpoints present an intriguing story. Since the characters are attending an astrology retreat, there is a fair amount of astrology in this book. I found it interesting, but this story could also be told without the astrology aspect.

The Astrology House is an atmospheric mystery. A suspenseful, dramatic, and entertaining thriller.

BOOK BLURB

You’ll be safe here.

That’s what the tour guide promises Dr. Linda Farmer and her family when they move to Plymouth Valley. Sure, the locals are privileged hot house flowers who observe a weird religion Hollow, but the schools are blue ribbon, the air’s clean, the food’s fantastic, and Linda’s out of options. With the outside world in shambles, this move is her family’s last chance.

Linda, her husband, and their teen twins work hard to fit in, accommodating their square peg personalities into rounded holes. It works at first—the family rise up, gaining acceptance from the powerful elite. Then Linda encounters Gal Parker, a hot mess of a woman, whose wife has abandoned her and whose kids are sick. One terrible night, Gal commits an unthinkable act.

All of Plymouth Valley turns on Gal, refusing to speak her name. But Linda can’t stop wondering: what would drive a woman to do something so awful? The more she learns, the more frightened she becomes. A clock is ticking, too—before the Plymouth Valley Winter Festival, Linda’s got to figure out: should she and her family be fighting to stay, or fighting their way out?

A Better World by Sarah Langan

MY REVIEW

While the world is falling apart, a company has created an idyllic community for their employees and their families to live. The Farmer family feels lucky to get accepted into the community, and they work hard to fit in. However, the longer they are there, the more they believe the community is not as perfect as it seems.

A Better World is mystery thriller set in a dystopian world. Interesting characters, eerie setting, and a suspenseful plot. A fast-paced, dark, and gripping novel.

BOOK BLURB

But Lenna is even more startled to learn that Rhiannon has a son and that she lives off the grid with a group of women in a community called Halcyon. Rhiannon invites Lenna, a new mother herself, to join them. Why suffer the sleepless nights by yourself? It takes a village, after all.

Lenna decides to go and hopefully repair her relationship with Rhiannon, but as she drives into the desert and her cell service gets weaker, she becomes suspicious. Who are these women and why did Rhiannon invite her here? And that is before she learns about the community’s rules (no outside phone calls, no questions about people’s pasts) and the padlock on the gate that leads out to the main road. But Lenna has other concerns, secrets from her past she is terrified will come out. When a newcomer arrives in the community, Lenna’s worst fears are confirmed—she was brought here for a reason.

Nowhere Like Home by Sara Shepard

MY REVIEW

Lenna is contacted by an old friend she hasn’t seen in years. The friend lives in a commune of women and children, and invites Lenna to join them. Once she arrives, Lenna realizes she was brought there for a reason.

Nowhere Like Home is told using multiple points of view and alternating timelines. The multiple POVs was easy to follow and added to the story. Complex characters and an intriguing story.

Nowhere Like Home was a slow-burning read. Fans of Sara Shepard’s other novels are likely to enjoy this one too.

The Search Party by Hannah Richell

BOOK BLURB

A spellbinding locked-room mystery about a glamping trip gone horribly wrong when a powerful storm leaves the participants stranded and forced to confront long-held secrets and a shocking disappearance.

Max and Annie Kingsley have left the London rat race with their twelve-year-old son to set up a glamping site in the wilds of Cornwall. Eager for a dry run ahead of their opening, they invite three old university friends and their families for a long-needed reunion. But the festivities soon go awry as tensions arise between the children (and subsequently their parents), explosive secrets come to light, and a sudden storm moves in, cutting them off from help as one in the group disappears.

Moving between the police investigation, a hospital room, and the catastrophic weekend, The Search Party is a propulsive and twisty destination thriller about the tenuous bonds of friendship and the lengths parents will go to protect their children—perfect for fans of Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley.

The Search Party by Hannah Richell

MY REVIEW

A glamping trip with old college friends does not go as planned. Not only are there issues between the adults, but not all of the children get along either. With a storm heading their way, and one of the group missing, tensions arise and secrets are revealed.

The Search Party is told using multiple points of view and alternating timelines. There are a lot of characters, but it wasn’t hard to follow.

The Search Party is a slow-burning mystery. Drama and suspense combine to make for an entertaining read.

There Should Have Been Eight by Nalini Singh

BOOK BLURB

Seven friends.
One last weekend.
A mansion half in ruins.
No room for lies.
Someone is going to confess.
Because there should have been eight. . . .

They met when they were teenagers. Now they’re adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to others—none more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago.

They’ve gathered to reminisce at Bea’s family’s estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and they’re snowed in at the edge of eternity, there’s nowhere left to hide from their shared history.

As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage. Underneath it all, there’s the nagging feeling that Bea’s shocking death wasn’t what it was claimed to be. And before the weekend is through, the truth will be unleashed—no matter the cost. . . .

There Should've Been Eight by Nalini Singh

MY REVIEW

Seven friends gather at the family estate of Bea, a member of the friend group who died nine years earlier. Bea’s sister owns the estate, and has invited the group to reminisce.

There Should Have Been Eight is told through Luna’s point of view. She was close friends with Bea, and never forgave Bea’s sister for the way she handled Bea’s death. It’s been years, and Luna wants answers about Bea’s death. Past and present come together as secrets and lies are revealed.

There Should Have Been Eight is an atmospheric and tense thriller. Unreliable characters in an intriguing story.

BOOK BLURB

Celia wakes up in a house that’s supposed to be hers. There’s a little girl who claims to be her daughter and a man who claims to be her husband, but Celia knows this family—and this life—is not hers…

Allie is supposed to be on a fun weekend trip—but then her friend’s boyfriend unexpectedly invites the group to a remote cabin in the woods. No one else believes Allie, but she is sure that something about this trip is very, very wrong…

Maggie just wants to be home with her daughter, but she’s in a dangerous situation and she doesn’t know who put her there or why. She’ll have to fight with everything she has to survive…

Three women. Three stories. Only one way out. This captivating novel will keep readers guessing until the very end.

Good Girls Don't Die by Christina Henry

MY REVIEW

Three stories of women with individual frightening experiences that eventually interconnect into one disturbing experience.

Good Girls Don’t Die has four parts – one for each of the three women, and the final part, where the stories come together. I enjoyed the individual parts more than the final part. While I found the ending to be a bit of a disappointment, I still was entertained by the book.

A fast-paced and suspenseful thriller. Recommended for fans of mixed genres and strong female leads.

The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa M. Matlin

BOOK BLURB

A therapist and self-help writer with all the answers, Sarah Slade has just bought a gorgeous Victorian in the community of her dreams. Turns out, you can get a killer deal on a house where someone was murdered. Plus, renovating Black Wood House makes for great blog content and a decent distraction from her failing marriage. Good thing nobody knows that her past is just as filthy as the bloodstain on her bedroom floor.

But the renovations are fast becoming a nightmare. Sarah imagined custom avocado wallpaper, massive profits, and an appreciative husband who wants to share her bed again. Instead, the neighbors hate her guts and her husband still sleeps on the couch. And though the builders attempt to cover up Black Wood’s horrifying past, a series of bizarre accidents, threatening notes, and unexplained footsteps in the attic only confirms for Sarah what the rest of the town already knew: Something is very wrong in that house.

With every passing moment, Sarah’s life spirals further out of control—and with it, her sense of reality. But as she peels back the curling wallpaper and discovers the house’s secrets, she realizes that the deadly legacy of Black Wood House has only just begun.

The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa M. Matlin

MY REVIEW

A successful influencer moves into a “murder house” to fix it up and blog about it. She’s hoping the new house and remodel will also help improve her marriage. Unfortunately, things do not go as she had hoped.

The Stranger Upstairs is a story with secrets and drama. Shifting timelines are used, though I found it to be somewhat disjointed. This is a slow burning novel that picks up during the second half.

An atmospheric, creepy, and dark thriller. The Stranger Upstairs is an enjoyable debut novel. Good for readers who enjoy dark thrillers with unlikable and unreliable narrators.
