Bitter Falls is the fourth book in the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine. Gwen Proctor and her family are back, and they are finding it harder and harder to fit into their local community. Gwen’s trying to keep her family safe and also keep herself busy. She takes on the cold case of a missing young man. Gwen’s investigation leads to her discovering other victims, and wanting to discover who is behind the disappearances.

This is an action-packed and exciting series. Gwen and her kids are not well-liked, and it is extremely difficult on the kids. Things are becoming more serious in their community, and the entire family is uncertain of their futures. I like the different viewpoints, and that each family member’s take on what is happening is represented. The characters in this book are likable and easy to root for. Gwen is still a badass, and she’s raising her kids to be strong, smart, and independent.

A fast-paced thriller that kept me wanting to read more. Interesting mystery with plenty of bad guys, in both Gwen’s personal and professional lives. Intriguing, dark, and intense.

Thomas is a man with a good life. This is his story about how things went wrong.

Told from Thomas’s point of view. He recalls the early days with his wife, his family life, and his work life. While everything seems ordinary, and even a bit dull in Thomas’s life, there is an underlying darkness. As Thomas tells his story, it’s clear that he’s not the good man he claims to be.

This book reminds me of Looker by Laura Sims, but from a male POV. A slow-paced psychological drama. While this novel has several things I love (unreliable narrator, picture perfect life, dark and twisted tale), I was never drawn into the story.

Elisabeth Pfautz lives in a small Alaskan town with her husband and daughter. While her husband is away on business, a stranger, Alfred Seidel, arrives in town and needs somewhere to stay. The Pfautz home is the place where locals direct someone in need of a room for a night or two, and Elisabeth reluctantly agrees that the man can stay there. Shortly after his arrival, he kills a local man. While in jail, Alfred wants to speak with Elisabeth, and only Elisabeth. To convince her to help him, he says he knows what happened to Elisabeth’s sister, Jacqueline. Twenty years earlier, Jacqueline disappeared, and Elisabeth is consumed by her need to find out what happened to her sister.

The remote setting is fantastic. It really sets the tone for a moody and somewhat depressing read. The characters are intriguing. Elisabeth is lonely, and has never gotten over her sister’s disappearance. Even putting herself and her family in danger doesn’t hold her back from learning about what happened.

A slow burning and atmospheric mystery. While there were some compelling parts to the novel, I was never fully drawn into the story.

MY REVIEW

Nathaniel and Elise Munroe are a married couple with kids. Their teen daughter goes missing and is found murdered. This leads into an investigation that looks at their family and friends.

Nathaniel and Elise met at a suicide support group. They shared something in common… both of their mothers were killed by the “Suicide Watcher,” a serial killer that manipulates victims into killing themselves. The “Watcher” plays a part in the current events unfolding in the Munroes lives.

This book has a lot happening. There are a lot of characters and various storylines. Also, multiple timelines and points of view are used. For me, too much was happening and it didn’t flow well. The parts concerning the “Watcher” were intriguing, but otherwise it was a fairly chaotic read. On the plus side, there is so much happening, it’s hard to guess who the killer is.

A couple of deaths, plenty of drama, and questionable behavior combine to make a clever suspense novel. The characters in this book are primarily young adults, but it reads as an adult novel.

Ash is the new girl at The Goode School, an elite boarding school for girls. Her arrival is the catalyst that leads to the events at The Goode School. I especially enjoyed the atmospheric boarding school setting. Lies, secrets, and rumors combined with money and power.

A slow burning mystery with secret societies and mean girls. Good for readers who enjoy mysteries and thrillers in a boarding school setting.

The Blossom Twins is the fifth book in the Detective Natalie Ward series by Carol Wyer. In this book, Natalie investigates the case of murdered sisters that resembles an older case that was supposedly solved. Natalie questions if they caught the right guy the first time around. As Natalie investigates, the killer continues to target other girls.

Natalie is a smart and strong female protagonist. She’s got a lot of strengths, but she also has flaws. The combination of her work life and personal life makes for a compelling read. I’m always intrigued with the mysteries in this series, and this book has one of the most difficult cases Natalie has worked.

This book is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. Each book has a different case that Detective Ward investigates, but the personal storyline advances and adds another layer to the stories. This is a fantastic series, so I recommend starting with the first book, The Birthday.

A dark and complex crime thriller. Good for fans of police procedurals. Gritty, intense, and fast-paced.

When Heather was twelve, she and three friends were members of The Dead Girls Club. They talked about true crime, bizzare deaths, and the supernatural. One of their supernatural stories was about the Red Lady, a vengeful witch. It’s all fun and games until one of Heather’s friends ends up dead. Nearly thirty years later someone wants the truth of that night to be revealed.

Told with alternating timelines – then and now. Heather has worked to forget her past, but she is forced to remember what happened when she receives a necklace in the mail. The necklace her friend was wearing on the night she died.

A coming of age story and suspenseful mystery. This novel has been listed as horror by some, but it reads much more like a mystery thriller. Dark, dramatic, and creepy.

Just Watch Me is the first book in a new series by Jeff Lindsay. This series features Riley Wolfe, a master thief. Riley loves a challenge, and prefers to work heists that seem impossible to pull off. In this book, Riley plans to steal the Iranian Crown Jewels.

Told using multiple points of view, this is a cat and mouse story involving a thrilling heist. Riley is charming, confident, and ruthless. He doesn’t mind taking extreme measures to get what he wants, and this makes him hard to like. That said, I enjoy books with unlikable and morally corrupt characters. Riley is a criminal who lies, cheats, steals, and kills to get his way. He has attracted the attention of FBI agent Frank Delgado, who is determined to bring Riley down.

Just Watch Me is a fun read for fans of heist novels and Lindsay’s Dexter series. Outrageous and exciting. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

Eight guests travel to a secluded lodge for a luxury spa vacation. They soon learn everything is not as described. A storm is heading their way, but they are trapped. Not only can they not get away, but one of them is responsible for luring the group there. Meanwhile, a search team is looking for the missing group.

Told with multiple points of view and alternating timelines. The viewpoints include the lodge guests and two members of the search party. The timeline for the search party is set in the “now” and follows the tracks of the lodge guests from days earlier. The writing is well done, and the POVs and timelines are easy to follow.

In the Dark is a fast-paced and intriguing mystery. Recommended for fans of And Then There Were None, which is referenced quite a bit in this book. Suspenseful, atmospheric, and clever.

A university’s emails are hacked, and leaked online for all to see. Lives are turned upside down as everyone tries to minimize the fallout of having private emails go public. Things escalate when a man is murdered, and it turns out everyone is keeping secrets.

Told using multiple points of view – Kit, Lynn, Raina, Laura, and Willa. Kit works at the university, is married to Greg, and has two daughters. Lynn works with Kit. Raina is a college student and friend of Kit’s daughter. Laura worked with Greg and is married to a police officer. Willa is Kit’s sister. A large cast of characters, but the various viewpoints are easy to follow.

Reputation is a fun and intriguing thriller. Good for readers who enjoy juicy mysteries. Gossipy, exciting, and twisty.

Josh and Nora are having an affair. Josh’s daughter is home from college, and she discovers her father’s secret. Josh’s wife Gwen is living what appears an ideal life, but she is not a happy woman. Family drama and suspense combine to make for a gripping read.

Told with alternating points of view of the women – Nora, Abby, and Gwen. Each woman is behaving differently than her usual self. The characters are well-developed and add a different and intriguing layer to the novel.

The Last Affair is a fantastic book for fans of domestic suspense. This is my third novel to read by Margot Hunt, and each one has delivered an addictive story. The Last Affair combines my favorite elements found in domestic suspense – unlikable characters, family drama, and a twisted plot.
