The story of the heart can never be unwritten.
Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.
But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.
Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.
After years apart, Macy runs into Elliot, her first love. Macy has kept herself closed off from love for most of her life. She and Elliott were friends as teenagers, and their friendship eventually led to more. Sadly, Elliott broke her heart. Running into Elliot brings back emotions that she needs to deal with, emotions that she has tried to bury for years.
Told with alternating timelines – past and present. The present day timeline starts with Macy and Elliott running into one another after eleven years apart. The past timeline is their relationship as teenagers. It was wonderful to see how Macy and Elliott’s friendship evolved. They met as young teens, bonded over their shared love of reading, and eventually realized their feelings for one another were more than friends. Unfortunately, their relationship ended.
The story unfolds in a way that doesn’t reveal the cause of their break-up until late in the story. This left me guessing as to why they ended their relationship, not only as lovers, but friends as well. At times the story was sweet and cute. At times it was heartbreaking. An emotional story of first love and second chances.
I enjoyed the characters and found them to be very relatable. I’ve noticed in other books by this writing duo, not only are the main characters great, but so are the supporting ones. Every character is well-developed and I love how the different relationships with family and friends are told.
A charming friends to lovers romance. Humorous, heartwarming, and romantic.
